Alot of people have recently gone natural to prove a point: we're happy to be nappy; proud to be natural; etc. But I decided to stop perming my hair because I'm cheap and I have no patience for hair salons. I got tired of spending $60 bucks for a hairstyle that may last a few days. I can't sleep on my hands either, so it was just a waste. So I decided to let what God gave me come on out and this was the end result. If you like it cool. If you don't, I could care less.
As far as hair politics go, I wish more Black women would be proud and comfortable enough to wear their hair how it naturally forms from their head. I know it's easier to manage straight hair, but you can go for days and not do a thing to your fro. People NEVER know when I'm having a bad hair day! ha! But we never discuss the standard of beauty that was created that led to us perming our hair: white womanhood was the standard, and thus it became our standard to live up to. But if you realize, we have never been able to uphold standards of white feminine beauty, our hair, our bodies, our dress, our existence is opposite of that. We need to embrace our own unique beauty and create our own standards, our own norms, and create our own set of politics (if you want to). I also stop wearing hair weave because it makes me itch - that's it (although it does smell funny (the cheaper it is the funnier it smells)). I think it's beautiful (sometimes).
